Next Meeting

This is a reminder. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday September 29 @ 11am @ Earth Fare. Remember to bring a few dollars to get a snack, or more money if you want a full lunch. We have much to discuss!

Tuesday September 29 @ 11am

PS. I need for all vegan members and nonmembers (even if you are not a Winthrop student) to contact me ASAP regarding an opportunity to participate in a small study. All that would be involved is a mouth swab for DNA and perhaps a form. A minimum of 24 participants will be necessary. sarahruthhoffman@gmail.com

Membership Rules

We do not charge membership dues if we believe that society is experiencing economic distress. Obviously, we do not currently charge for membership!

All you must do in order to become a member is:

A) Consider yourself vegetarian by your own standards OR intend to become a vegetarian
B) Be on our e-mailing list. To get on the mailing list contact sarahruthhoffman@gmail.com

If you do not fulfill requirement A for any reason, you are welcome to call yourself an "associate" or an "associate member". Associate members may not participate (vote, run) in elections but are welcome to participate in everything else.

Be aware that any potluck events will require that contributions be vegan. Whenever we serve food, we adhere to the strictest standards so that everybody can eat regardless of their degree of vegetarianism. Don't be afraid to ask if you are unsure of whether what you want to bring is actually vegan. If you do bring something that you are unsure about, please notify one of the officers so that all vegans in attendance will be informed so that they can choose whether or not to take a chance.

Thank You,

Sarah Ruth Hoffman

First Fall 2009 Meeting

Ten people showed up for our first meeting of the semester. We had a casual lunch at Earth Fare and discussed our plans! There are now 52 people on our mailing list. There are 47 members, 2 faculty/advisors, and 3 officers. If just 1% of Winthrop students are vegetarian then that means that there should be about 60 of us! Every week a few more come out of the woodwork. We are a diverse group consisting of vegans, lacto-ovo-vegetarians, ovo-vegetarians, lacto-vegetarians, and semi-vegetarians. There is even more diversity in our reasoning. Our discussions will be interesting, for sure. I expect that we will learn very much from one another in the coming year. Our next meeting will be Tuesday September 29 @ 11am @ Earth Fare.

Trying Vegetarianism

Sara (President), Sarah (Founder), and I (Vice Pres.) are super excited about the coming year! We've got a few awesome events planned, such as the Cruelty Free Fashion Show and the Vegan Thanksgiving Feast! The number of veg and veg-curious students we've met through Convocation and the Clubs and Orgs fair was encouraging; however, like many other students, I'm sure, I frequently hear from others that they are contemplating vegetarianism or veganism, but are unsure/ tried and "failed"/have a protein/iron/vitamin-deficiency, or other such impediments. So after searching around a little bit I found a great article from Vegetarian Times that may encourage those who are a little timid about vegetarianism to give it a(nother) try :) ...and to remind those of you who are already on the bandwagon of some of the reasons you smartly decided to ditch your standard American diet in the first place. By the way, isn't "smart" kind of a funny word? Smart...I digress. Enjoy! http://www.vegetariantimes.com/resources/why_go_veg/

Welcome back Winthrop! This will be an exciting school year! A new decade begins mid-year and we hope to see a continued rise in animal rights awareness and vegetarianism.

We have two major events to work on this semester:

1. The Cruelty-free Fashion Show: we need male and female models of all shapes and sizes, preferably vegetarian. Officers have been working on this all summer, meticulously selecting appropriate music and doing some hardcore brainstorming.

2. The Vegan Thanksgiving Feast! Need I say more?
